Printed Material for Adult English Language Learners
1) It must not contain language that presents a challenge too great for the students' current level.
2) If the directions for what to do are beyond the students' understanding, don't include them on the page. It is for the teacher to convey to the students what to do with the page.
3) The content or topic must be relevant to the students' lives, general interests, or goals.
4) Language must sound natural. Material should not contain language that is irrelevant or not in sync with the language context or topic.
5) Pictures must only be included that assist the students in achieving understanding of the language presented in a lesson.
6) Pictures must be simple presentations suitable to adult learners. Do not crowd a page with pictures that are extremely bright, colorful, and too cartoon-like, as this distracts from the language the students are learning and can even be overwhelming.
7) Language that is not relevant to the lesson's objective and that is beyond the students' current ability to understand must not be included. This can discourage and can easily distract them.
8) Material should present new language and challenge the students' current skill level, but it must be balanced with enough language that is accessible to the students' current understanding. Material should not implicitly or explicitly challenge students too far beyond their current comfort level with the language.
9) Lesson material must take into account a particular language function, topic, context, or content area that is relevant to the students' lives and current ability: it should be interesting, and it should not be too difficult or too easy.
